Description

Rich, moist, and decadent chocolate cupcakes topped with a fluffy chocolate buttercream frosting. These cupcakes are perfect for any celebration or as an everyday indulgence.


Ingredients

  • For the cupcakes:
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • For the chocolate buttercream frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (more if needed)
  • 1/4 cup whole milk (more if needed)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the boiling water and mix until well combined. The batter will be thin, but that’s okay!
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  7. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
  10. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Beat on low until combined, then increase the speed and beat until fluffy.
  11. Add vanilla extract and gradually add heavy cream and milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
  12. Frost the cooled cupcakes with the chocolate buttercream frosting using a piping bag or spatula. Decorate as desired!

Notes

  • If you prefer a richer chocolate flavor, you can use dark cocoa powder.
  • To make the cupcakes even more decadent, fill them with chocolate ganache or frosting in the center before baking.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add more milk or heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, until smooth.
