Description
A classic Italian seafood dish featuring fresh mussels simmered in a fragrant garlic and tomato sauce with olive oil and herbs, perfect served with crusty bread.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs fresh mussels, cleaned and debearded
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup dry white wine (optional)
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse mussels under cold water and discard any that are open and do not close when tapped.
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Add garlic and red pepper flakes; cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and white wine (if using); simmer for 8–10 minutes.
- Add mussels to the pot and cover with a lid.
- Cook for 5–7 minutes, shaking the pot occasionally, until mussels open.
- Discard any unopened mussels.
- Season with salt and black pepper, garnish with parsley and basil, and serve hot.
Notes
- Serve with crusty bread or over pasta.
- Do not overcook mussels to keep them tender.
- You may substitute wine with vegetable broth.
