Description
Traditional Czech garlic soup (Česnečka) is a comforting, savory broth loaded with garlic, potatoes, and spices, often served with toasted bread and cheese—perfect for cold days or as a restorative soup.
Ingredients
- 6 cups water or beef broth
- 4–5 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon marjoram
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon butter or lard
- 2 slices bread, cubed and toasted
- 1/4 cup grated cheese (Edam or Gruyère)
- 1 egg (optional)
Instructions
- In a pot, bring the water or broth to a boil.
- Add diced potatoes, caraway seeds, salt, and black pepper, then simmer until potatoes are tender.
- Stir in the minced garlic and marjoram.
- Add butter and let the soup simmer gently for 2–3 minutes.
- If using, whisk the egg and slowly stir it into the soup to create delicate strands.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
- Serve hot topped with toasted bread cubes and grated cheese.
