Description
Four-Cheese Mac & Cheese is a rich and creamy comfort dish made with tender pasta coated in a velvety blend of cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, and Gruyère cheeses, baked until bubbly and golden.
Ingredients
- 16 oz elbow macaroni
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups whole milk, warmed
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for topping, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cook macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in warm milk and heavy cream. Cook until thickened, about 4–5 minutes.
- Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Reduce heat to low and stir in cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, and Gruyère until melted and smooth.
- Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat evenly.
- Transfer mixture to prepared baking dish.
- If using topping, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the top.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Shred cheese fresh for smoother melting.
- Add cooked bacon or caramelized onions for extra flavor.
- For extra creaminess, skip baking and serve straight from the stovetop.
- Broil for 2–3 minutes at the end for a crispier topping.
