Description

Mozzarella Stick Onion Rings are crispy golden onion rings stuffed with melty mozzarella cheese, breaded and fried until crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 12 mozzarella sticks
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 1/2 cups (90 g) breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Marinara sauce for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings. Separate the rings and pair a smaller ring inside a larger one, leaving space between them.
  2. Cut the mozzarella sticks into pieces that fit into the gap between the onion rings.
  3. Place the mozzarella pieces between the onion rings to fill the gap completely.
  4. Place the stuffed onion rings on a tray and freeze them for about 1 hour so the cheese firms up.
  5. Prepare a breading station with three bowls: one with flour, one with eggs whisked with milk, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  6. Dip each frozen onion ring first into flour, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
  7. For extra crispiness, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating once more.
  8. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 175°C (350°F).
  9. Fry the onion rings for 2–3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Remove and drain on paper towels, then serve hot with marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Freezing the rings before frying helps prevent the cheese from leaking out.
  • Panko breadcrumbs create a crunchier coating.
  • These can also be cooked in an air fryer at 190°C (375°F) for about 8–10 minutes.
  • Serve immediately while the cheese inside is still melted and stretchy.
