Description
Mozzarella Stick Onion Rings are crispy golden onion rings stuffed with melty mozzarella cheese, breaded and fried until crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside.
Ingredients
- 2 large onions
- 12 mozzarella sticks
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 1/2 cups (90 g) breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Marinara sauce for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings. Separate the rings and pair a smaller ring inside a larger one, leaving space between them.
- Cut the mozzarella sticks into pieces that fit into the gap between the onion rings.
- Place the mozzarella pieces between the onion rings to fill the gap completely.
- Place the stuffed onion rings on a tray and freeze them for about 1 hour so the cheese firms up.
- Prepare a breading station with three bowls: one with flour, one with eggs whisked with milk, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Dip each frozen onion ring first into flour, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
- For extra crispiness, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating once more.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 175°C (350°F).
- Fry the onion rings for 2–3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove and drain on paper towels, then serve hot with marinara sauce.
Notes
- Freezing the rings before frying helps prevent the cheese from leaking out.
- Panko breadcrumbs create a crunchier coating.
- These can also be cooked in an air fryer at 190°C (375°F) for about 8–10 minutes.
- Serve immediately while the cheese inside is still melted and stretchy.
