Description
A smooth and creamy Italian panna cotta made with milk, cream, and vanilla, gently set using agar-agar for a vegetarian-friendly dessert.
Ingredients
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon agar-agar powder
- Fresh berries or fruit sauce for topping (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix agar-agar powder with 2 tablespoons of the milk and set aside.
- In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, remaining milk, and sugar.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring until sugar is fully dissolved.
- Add the agar-agar mixture and bring to a gentle boil, stirring constantly.
- Simmer for 2–3 minutes to activate the agar-agar.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Pour the mixture into serving molds or ramekins.
- Let cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours until set.
- Unmold or serve directly with fresh berries or fruit sauce.
Notes
- Agar-agar sets firmer than gelatin; do not overuse.
- For a dairy-free version, use coconut milk and almond milk.
- Can be made a day ahead and refrigerated.
